IRS quarters are not calendar quarters. That is the whole reason this exists.

The four estimated-tax periods are uneven, and they always have been:

Period 1 — January 1 to March 31, due April 15
Period 2 — April 1 to May 31, due June 15
Period 3 — June 1 to August 31, due September 15
Period 4 — September 1 to December 31, due January 15

Split your year into four even quarters, as most templates quietly do, and you underpay in June and overpay in January. The penalty is charged per period, so a big January payment does not undo a short June one.

Most Claude Code setups consist of a CLAUDE.md that grew by accretion until nobody reads it, including the model. That is not a bad start — it is an incomplete one, because it uses one of the three mechanisms the tool gives you and leaves the other two alone.

The three are worth naming precisely, because they solve different problems:

CLAUDE.md is context. It is loaded into every request, so it is expensive, and it is advisory — the model can ignore it.
Subagents are delegation. They keep a job’s context out of your main conversation and give it a narrower toolset.
Hooks are enforcement. They are shell commands your machine runs at fixed points, and they do not care what the model intended.

Set up in that order, each one covering what the previous cannot.

Almost everyone sets their first freelance rate the same way: look at what other people seem to charge, pick something slightly under it so you don’t scare anyone off, and hope it works out. It usually doesn’t, and the reason is not that the number was too low in some abstract sense. It’s that the calculation ran in the wrong direction.

Market comparison tells you what a rate is. It cannot tell you what a rate has to be for you to still be in business in two years. Only one direction of the arithmetic does that: start with the money you need to end up with, add back everything that gets taken out on the way, and divide by the hours you can realistically sell.
